MAKERS making stuff.
Welcome to Golden Mile Zines: a zine-making project that celebrates expressions of identity, creativity, and the space youth take up within the Golden Mile community.
Curated by Makers Toronto, the exhibition portrays self-published zines, each containing tidbits the youth deemed worthy of sharing with the community. From favourite food spots and fun stories with friends to highlighting the importance of community, these zines share a glimmer of the happenings in the lives of youth.
The workshops highlighted art techniques such as block printing, story writing, drawing, painting, and photography — all of which were used to create these zines.
A zine is a self-published book that can talk about anything you are interested in and offers a space for sharing ideas, expressions, and works of art.
Zines were first created in the science fiction fandoms of the 1930s, where they were first known as fanzine, which is short for “fan magazine.” Eventually, fanzine was just shortened to zine, and the range of topics widened to include just about anything.
Zines gave fans the opportunity to network, share thoughts and observations, and collaborate on writing and art long before the Internet was even a thing.
